From a Dumpyard to a Forest Garden
In the foothills of Darjeeling, a 1.5-acre ancestral land had turned into a dump yard, buried under waste from nearby villages and municipalities. When Utsow Pradhan returned home after his corporate stint, he was heartbroken by the state of his childhood land. Determined to bring it back to life, he and his team cleared 13,500 sacks of garbage, but with every sack removed, a deeper truth emerged—cleanups alone weren’t enough. Moving waste from one place to another was no solution.
This realization gave birth to TIEEDI and the vision of a Waste Innovation Center, a place to find holistic answers to the plastic crisis suffocating the mountains. The land that was once a symbol of neglect is now a thriving forest garden—a testament to what’s possible when we rethink waste and act with purpose.
Our mountains deserve better. Pure Air, Fresh Water and Rich Soil for all beings.
